It took researchers 29 tries, one hollowed-out log, and years of trial and error — but a wild palm cockatoo has finally raised a chick inside a nest that humans built for it.

Huge birds need huge trees

On Cape York Peninsula, Queensland's most northern tip, the palm cockatoo is one of Australia's most ancient and endangered birds — a striking, black-feathered parrot famous for drumming rhythms on trees with sticks during courtship. But its survival depends on something far less visible: the right hollow.

Because the birds are 60 centimetres long, it can take more than 250 years for a tree to naturally develop a cavity big enough to hold them, carved out slowly by termites or fungi and only made accessible after a cyclone snaps off the treetop. Land clearing and increasingly intense fires have made those ancient hollows rarer every year, pushing the species toward local extinction.

A blueprint two years in the making

In response, People for Wildlife worked with conservationists and Apudthama traditional owners to install 29 artificial hollows — three different designs — in locations where birds were present but not already nesting. The winning design, nicknamed the "palm cockatube," was carved from a fallen old-growth tree and layered inside with sticks of different sizes to mimic the structure the birds expect.

Months later, researchers watched adult birds enter that specific hollow to feed and incubate an egg laid around September. The chick hatched, grew, and eventually fledged — the first time a palm cockatoo has successfully bred inside a human-made nest anywhere in Australia.

"This is huge news," said People for Wildlife associate researcher Dr. Christina Zdenek.

"We have a highly endangered species in severe decline, and we've been working for years to crack the code of how to help them. And we finally have."

A blueprint for hundreds of species

People For Wildlife conservation scientist Dr. Benjamin Muller was on site to capture the moment the fledgling left the nest. "We've now demonstrated that with our methodology, we can create that crucial nesting habitat for this species and apply it across its range," he said. The team plans to install more hollows and add fire breaks around the nesting trees to protect them from Cape York's increasingly severe bushfire seasons.

The technique isn't limited to palm cockatoos. Ecologist Matt Stephens, who has already used artificial hollows to help re-establish southern greater gliders in New South Wales and swift parrots in Tasmania, says the approach is increasingly filling a gap left by the loss of old-growth trees across the country.

Dr. Zdenek says the ripple effects could reach far beyond one species: roughly 400 Australian animals rely on tree hollows to survive. "Palm cockatoos here are the umbrella species — if you save them, you save dozens of others," she said. "All of a sudden, it's not a lack of knowledge that would send them to extinction. It would be a lack of effort."
