One of the most remarkable feats of cooperative engineering in ancient history has been hiding in plain sight — visible from the air above the wetlands of northern Colombia.

A new study from the University of Cambridge and the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History (ICANH), published in the journal Communications Sustainability, has confirmed that communities living in what is now the La Mojana region of Colombia built an extraordinary network of canals and raised agricultural fields stretching across 500,000 hectares — roughly three times the size of modern London.

The system, which was in active use from the first centuries BC through the 11th century AD, allowed farmers to manage the dramatic seasonal swings of the Colombian wetlands: channeling excess water during heavy rains, redirecting it in dry months, and buffering communities against both flood and drought.

What makes the finding especially striking is what the researchers found was NOT required to build it: a powerful government, hierarchical chiefdoms, or centralized control of any kind.

"These field systems are so impressive that people have assumed they were achieved by hierarchical chiefdoms," said Dr. Jasmine Vieri, the study's lead author from Cambridge. "Our findings indicate that local communities were capable of building these systems and organizing themselves."

The La Mojana network was built by people who lived contemporaneously with the Maya civilization and the Andean societies that would eventually give rise to the Aztec and Inca empires. But unlike those state-level societies, the La Mojana communities left no evidence of rulers, palaces, or centralized political authority — only of extraordinary collective accomplishment.

To understand how it was done, the researchers developed a new method to estimate the labor involved. Starting from an estimated local population of 1,600 people, with an 800-person active workforce — drawing on evidence that men, women, and likely children all participated in subsistence farming — they calculated that the system could have been constructed much faster and with much less effort than previously assumed.

Using satellite imagery, the team mapped a 500-hectare section of the field systems in the municipality of San Marcos, Sucre, recording the dimensions of 1,600 individual ridges and 63 housing platforms in extraordinary detail. Each ridge, when first built, would have stood roughly 1.4 meters above the bed of the canal beside it.

The canal network served multiple purposes beyond water management. It created more fertile, workable soil during dry seasons. It may have helped communities trap and sustain fish populations. And its raised platforms provided stable ground for housing even during the region's periodic floods.

"Their raised field system managed huge quantities of water during heavy rains, gradually redirecting it in drier months," the research team noted — a form of water engineering that modern hydrologists would recognize as genuinely sophisticated.

The discovery carries implications well beyond archaeology. Colombia today faces a serious water management crisis, exacerbated by climate change — irregular rainfall, flooding, and prolonged drought affecting millions of people. The researchers suggest that the cooperative, locally-led organizational model their ancient counterparts used may offer real lessons for modern communities grappling with similar pressures.

"Our findings are important historically but also offer hope to Colombians today," Dr. Vieri noted.

The study is a powerful reminder that some of humanity's greatest engineering achievements were not the products of empires or rulers. They were built by communities that organized themselves, worked together, and created something that endured for more than a thousand years.
