Amira Osei, a 17-year-old student from Nairobi, has developed a revolutionary water purification device that costs less than $5 to produce and can clean enough water for a family of five for an entire year.\n\nUsing a combination of activated charcoal from coconut shells and a novel UV-filtering membrane she designed, Amira's invention removes 99.9% of harmful bacteria and parasites from contaminated water.\n\n"Clean water shouldn't be a luxury," Amira said at the Global Young Innovators Summit. "Every child deserves to drink without fear."\n\nThe device has already been tested in three rural communities in Kenya, with remarkable results. UNICEF has expressed interest in partnering with Amira to scale production across East Africa.
