An all-electric aircraft just flew mail across Scotland for the first time, marking a milestone for both aviation and postal services. On March 20, Royal Mail, regional airline Loganair, and US aerospace company BETA Technologies completed the UK's first live demonstration of electric flight on an operational postal route — Glasgow to Dundee.
Additional demonstration routes are planned across Scotland's regional airport network, including Aberdeen, Inverness, Wick, and Orkney. The aircraft carried representative letters and parcels, mirroring the daily services that connect remote communities across the Highlands and Islands.
The Plane
At the heart of the trial is BETA Technologies' ALIA CTOL, an all-electric conventional takeoff and landing aircraft designed for regional cargo and passenger use. The plane can operate from existing runways without new infrastructure, recharges in approximately 20 to 40 minutes, and has a demonstrated range of 336 nautical miles with a payload capacity of up to 560 kilograms.
Those specs make it a practical option for Scotland's short, high-frequency regional routes — exactly the kind of flying where electric propulsion makes the most sense.

From Concept to Reality
Loganair CEO Luke Farajallah called the program "a landmark day for European aviation," emphasizing that this was not about concepts or distant ambition. "This is a real, tangible programme of flying across our network which will provide invaluable data on how an electric aircraft could perform in a real commercial environment."
The initiative builds on Royal Mail's broader decarbonization strategy. The company announced in 2024 it would halve domestic flights as part of its Net-Zero by 2040 target, while expanding electric delivery vans and drone services for island communities.
First Minister John Swinney praised the milestone, noting it positions Scotland to play a leading role in reducing aviation's carbon emissions while supporting regional connectivity.
The trial has backing from both government and regulators, who see electric aviation as a key component of wider decarbonization and connectivity strategies. For remote communities in the Highlands and Islands, it could mean reliable, sustainable air links for decades to come.
