A coral reef off the coast of Benin in West Africa, long presumed dead and forgotten since the 1960s, has been rediscovered teeming with life — a finding scientists describe as a glimpse into "an archive that has been there for a very long time."
The discovery, published in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science on July 20, began with a footnote in history. Surveys conducted in the 1960s, focused on identifying promising fishing grounds, noted a possible deep-water reef structure off the Gulf of Guinea coast. Scientists at the time assumed it was likely dead or negligible, and the record was largely forgotten. For decades, the notation sat unexamined.
Gérard Zinzindohoué and his colleagues at the Institute of Halieutic and Oceanographic Research in Cotonou, Benin, decided to take another look. Armed with modern sonar technology and an underwater drone — including the Deep Sea Camera System provided by the National Geographic Exploration Technology Lab — they set out to survey seven miles of seabed using the historical records as their guide.
"It was a mix of long days at sea, technical problems, and a lot of uncertainty," said lead author Zinzindohoué. "I still remember seeing those first images. It was a mix of excitement and disbelief, because after all this time thinking about this reef, suddenly there was something real in front of us."
What they found exceeded all expectations. The underwater footage revealed an apparently healthy mesophotic coral ecosystem — a type of reef that lives between roughly 30 and 150 meters depth, where light is far more limited than in shallow tropical reefs. Rather than a continuous barrier, the reef appeared as a series of coral patches distributed across rocky seafloor structures.
Eight different types of coral and eight species of fish were documented sheltering in and around the corals. The fish included golden African snappers, blackbar soldierfish, Guinean angelfish, West African goatfish, the Monrovia doctorfish, three-banded butterflyfish, and two species of damselfish — a vibrant cast of Atlantic reef species revealing a living community hidden beneath the surface.
"To our knowledge, this is the first confirmed record of a living mesophotic coral ecosystem on the Gulf of Guinea continental shelf," Zinzindohoué said. "However, I think what we found is probably not an exception."
He believes the Gulf of Guinea likely harbors other uncharted or forgotten reef systems. West Africa's coastal waters are among the least-surveyed marine environments in the world, and this discovery opens the possibility that many similar ecosystems are waiting to be found.
What makes the finding especially exciting is its scientific potential. If the corals were actually dead in the 1960s and have since recovered, they would represent a remarkable case of reef resilience — a precious research target as scientists study how marine ecosystems might adapt to a changing climate. Even if the reef was alive all along and simply overlooked, it represents an entirely new data point in West African marine biology.
For now, the research team cannot directly sample the corals, so species identifications still need confirmation through follow-up expeditions. Zinzindohoué said his first priority, given unlimited funding, would be to return with a full scientific diving and sampling program.
"It feels like we have only just started to read an archive that has been there for a very long time," he said. "For me, the most exciting part is about understanding the reef's history, and what it can tell us about how the ocean in this region has changed over time. If we were able to find this reef again after 60 years, how many others are still undocumented or simply forgotten?"
