Leopards are revered in western Zambia. Their distinctive spotted pelts have long been worn as ceremonial regalia during the Kuomboka — an annual festival in which 200 paddlers ferry the Lozi king, the Litunga, across the floodwaters. The demand for real leopard skins was long linked to poaching. Now, the tide is turning — and the leopards are coming back.

The shift began with a programme led by Panthera, the global wild cat conservation organisation, which worked with Zambian communities to develop Heritage Furs: high-quality synthetic alternatives that replicate the appearance of real leopard skin. The critical breakthrough came when the Litunga issued a royal decree that only Heritage Furs should be worn at official ceremonies.

"Our results provide the first empirical link between a demand-reduction initiative based on synthetic substitutes and measurable population recovery of a species," said Aditya Shekhar Malgaonkar, lead author of a new study published in the journal Conservation Biology and a scientist at Panthera.

The results are striking. In western Zambia, leopard populations are rebounding, poaching incidents are down, and just 10% of the Litunga's paddlers now favour real furs over the synthetic alternative. A decade-long projection suggests the shift could save between 204 and 1,310 leopards in the region alone — a range that reflects uncertainty around enforcement levels and the breadth of adoption.

From Demand to Recovery

The approach turns traditional conservation logic on its head. Rather than focusing solely on law enforcement and anti-poaching patrols, Panthera targeted the cultural demand driving poaching in the first place. By providing a product communities found acceptable — and by securing royal endorsement — they changed the incentive structure for poachers at its root.

Across southern Africa more broadly, Panthera has now supplied more than 22,000 Heritage Furs. While rigorous evaluation of the programme's impact had previously been limited, the new research in Conservation Biology provides the first systematic evidence that it works at a measurable population level.

A Template for the Future

Leopards (Panthera pardus) are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with populations declining across much of their historic range. Sub-Saharan Africa holds some of the world's most important leopard strongholds, but habitat loss and poaching continue to apply pressure.

What makes the Heritage Furs approach particularly promising is its scalability. Similar programmes could, in principle, be adapted for other species where cultural demand drives illegal killing — whether elephants, pangolins, or sea turtles. The essential ingredients are community engagement, culturally acceptable alternatives, and authoritative endorsement.

The success in Zambia also demonstrates the importance of working with communities rather than against them. Rather than imposing outside rules about ceremonial dress, Panthera collaborated with communities to find solutions that honoured cultural traditions while protecting wildlife.

The study was published in Conservation Biology in 2026, and represents what researchers call the first-ever empirical link between a demand-reduction programme and measurable population recovery for a wild cat species. For Zambia's leopards — and potentially for big cats across southern Africa — the prognosis is looking better than it has in years.
