For elephants that spent years or even decades in captivity — performing for tourists, living in enclosures, dependent on human caretakers — the idea of returning to the wild might seem like too much to ask.
New research suggests otherwise.
A five-year study of 11 formerly captive elephants rewilded across four reserves in South Africa has found that these animals adapted to life in the wild with remarkable success — behaving, in the words of the researchers, "very similarly" to elephants that were born free.
Five years of careful observation
The study was conducted by the Elephant Reintegration Trust of South Africa, which tracked each of the 11 animals for three weeks at a time, at least once per year, over five years. Researchers watched for signs of stress, behavioral "holdovers" from captivity such as excessive aggression or confrontation, and evidence that the animals were struggling to adapt.
Instead, they found animals that had figured things out.
"What I found most fascinating was watching elephants that had spent decades in captivity adapt so successfully to life in the wild," said co-author Tenisha Roos. "Seeing them respond to their environment and function much like wild elephants was truly awe-inspiring and a powerful reminder of their remarkable resilience, adaptability, and behavioral flexibility."
Stress levels: within normal range
The team collected fecal samples from each rewilded elephant to test for metabolic stress hormones — an objective measure of how much physiological strain the animals were under. The results showed stress biomarker levels within the normal range for wild elephant populations.
In other words, these animals were not merely coping. Their bodies reflected the calm of animals that had found their place.
Some individuals showed slightly elevated markers compared to the wild average, but none rose above the threshold associated with chronic stress. The findings were published in the journal PLOS One.
Each elephant found its own way
One of the most striking findings was the degree of individual variation. Different elephants adapted in different ways, on different timelines, and through different behavioral strategies — likely reflecting each animal's unique personality, prior captive experience, and social circumstances on their new reserve.
Co-author Brett Mitchell put it simply: "The data from this project show that when captive elephants are rewilded and given the opportunity, they can regain full autonomy and re-establish natural patterns of movement and behavior."
Tammy Eggeling, another co-author, added: "Although previously-captive elephants may carry the memories of confinement, our research has shown that, when given the opportunity, they can leave that past behind. They are able to learn new skills, adapt to unfamiliar environments, and ultimately thrive as wild elephants."
Why it matters
The 11 elephants in the study represent more than half of all rewilded elephants in South Africa — making this research both practically significant and scientifically comprehensive.
Elephants face ongoing pressure from habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal poaching. Rewilding programs offer one pathway to increasing wild populations without relying solely on natural reproduction — but only if they work. This study suggests they do.
The findings also carry broader implications for conservation. If elephants — among the most cognitively complex animals on Earth, with deep social bonds and long memories — can successfully transition from captivity to the wild, it opens the door to more ambitious rewilding programs for elephants currently living in zoos and sanctuaries around the world.
For the animals in this study, at least, the transition to the wild was not just possible. It was, by every measure the researchers could find, a genuine success.
