For Matt Walker, getting a dog was always out of the question. Even breeds marketed as hypoallergenic — poodles, goldendoodles — left him with itchy eyes, rashes, and sneezing fits. His family's goldendoodle proved no exception.

Now he lives in New York City with Bailey, a beagle who lies on his lap while he feeds her peanut butter. She plays fetch in Central Park. She snuggles at his feet when he's sick. And his allergies, for the first time in his life, stay quiet.

Because Bailey's DNA is different from every other dog on Earth.

The World's First Gene-Edited Hypoallergenic Dogs

Walker is a geneticist at Kindred Companion Sciences. Along with his colleague's beagle Alfie, Bailey was created using CRISPR — the Nobel prize-winning gene editing technique — to produce what researchers say are the world's first genuinely hypoallergenic dogs.

The key insight: dog allergies don't come from fur itself, but from a specific protein called Can f 1, produced in dogs' skin and saliva. This protein gets into the air on dander and hair, triggering immune reactions in the roughly 10 to 20 percent of people who are allergic to dogs.

Kindred's team edited the gene responsible for Can f 1 production in dog skin cells, effectively switching it off. They then transferred the modified genetic code into eggs, implanted them in a surrogate beagle, and waited. In September 2024, Bailey and Alfie were born healthy — and without the allergy-triggering protein in their fur or saliva.

The proof came in a skin-prick allergy test: Walker's arm reacted to samples from a standard poodle and goldendoodle, but showed no reaction to samples from Bailey and Alfie.

The research was published in August 2026 in the CRISPR Journal, marking the first successful application of this approach in dogs.

A Common Genetic Tweak

One reassuring detail: the specific genetic edit that produces Bailey and Alfie's allergy-free biology already occurs naturally in a small percentage of dogs. The team identified this naturally occurring variant and replicated it precisely — they didn't create something entirely new, but rather selected and amplified a variation that nature had already tried.

"It feels just amazing to get to have a dog," said Walker. "I've been a dog lover my whole life. Growing up, I just couldn't be around them."

Still Early Days

Scientists not involved in the study flag important caveats. Can f 1 is the primary — but not the only — protein that causes dog allergies. Testing on a broader group of allergy sufferers will be needed to confirm how widely effective the edit is.

Bioethicist Arthur Caplan of NYU noted the double-edged nature of the advance: while it could bring dog ownership to millions who are currently excluded, it may also reduce adoptions of shelter and rescue animals who haven't been engineered to be allergy-free.

Kindred plans to test the technique on other breeds and service dog lines, with a goal of creating an allergy-free line of dogs across multiple breeds. Commercialization is likely years away — regulatory review, long-term health monitoring of Bailey and Alfie, and scale-up challenges still lie ahead.

But for Walker and Bailey, the future is already here. A lifelong dog lover finally has a dog.
