America's home heating revolution has quietly reached a tipping point. For the first time, heat pumps — the efficient, electric-powered systems that both heat and cool — are substantially outselling traditional gas furnaces, boilers, and conventional air conditioners. The numbers are in, and they tell a clear story: the most climate-friendly home heating technology is going mainstream.

According to a new report from the nonprofit Building Decarbonization Coalition, heat pump sales in the United States outpaced older heating systems by 32% in the first quarter of 2026. That is not a modest blip — it represents a sustained acceleration of a trend that has been building for years.

How Heat Pumps Work

Unlike gas furnaces, which generate heat by burning fuel, heat pumps move heat from one place to another. They extract thermal energy from outdoor air — even when it is cold outside — and transfer it indoors in winter, then reverse the process to cool homes in summer.

Because they move heat rather than generate it, heat pumps are dramatically more efficient than any combustion-based system, typically delivering three to five units of thermal energy for every unit of electricity consumed. Modern models also use refrigerants with far lower global warming potential than older generations, following EPA regulations phasing out substances that were, in some cases, up to 2,000 times more potent as greenhouse gases than carbon dioxide.

The Numbers

The Building Decarbonization Coalition report also shows that heat pump sales have more than doubled over the past 15 years. In 2025, 46% of all new homes built in the United States were completed with heat pump systems — just one percentage point below the combined figure for all traditional heating alternatives.

"All the trends are pointing towards increased heat pump adoption, not only versus gas, but also versus just traditional one-way air conditioning," Kevin Carbonnier, associate director of analytics at the coalition, told Grist. "It's not just that heat pumps are better, more comfortable, more efficient than furnaces. But also, you get the two-in-one appliance."

What Is Driving the Shift

Several forces are converging. Higher energy prices have made efficiency more valuable. Climate goals — at both policy and personal levels — are pushing consumers toward lower-carbon choices. Rising home prices are encouraging builders to cut costs wherever possible, and electric-only construction, where builders skip gas lines entirely, has emerged as an attractive option.

Builders have also noticed that pairing heat pumps with electric induction cooktops eliminates the need for gas connections altogether, streamlining construction and reducing long-term maintenance costs for homeowners.

A Historic Inflection Point

The share of new American homes built without any gas heating is rising. The share built with the cleanest available alternative is rising faster.
