India just parked a satellite 36,000 kilometers above Earth on its first attempt at dedicated geosynchronous imaging — after two previous missions this year ended in failure before ever reaching orbit.

Third time's the charm
The GSLV-F17 rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 2:55 a.m. local time on September 4, carrying the EOS-05 satellite (also known as GISAT-1A) after a smooth 27-hour countdown. Rain and the pre-dawn hour didn't stop crowds from gathering to watch the launch in person.
The mission mattered beyond just one satellite. It was a replacement for the failed GSLV-F10/EOS-03 mission in 2021, which was aborted mid-flight after a cryogenic-stage anomaly. It also followed two separate ISRO failures earlier in 2026 alone: a PSLV-C62 mission in January that mis-deployed 16 satellites, and a PSLV-C61/EOS-09 mission that failed on a motor pressure issue. Friday's launch ended an eight-month gap in India's launch calendar and gave the agency its first win of the year, following the mission failure of PSLV-C62 in January and the earlier PSLV-C61/EOS-09 setback in 2025 — a run of bad luck ISRO badly needed to break.
What EOS-05 will actually do
Unlike most Earth-observation satellites, which orbit close to the planet, EOS-05 sits in geosynchronous orbit roughly 36,000 km up — meaning it stays fixed over the same patch of Earth around the clock instead of circling in and out of view. That constant vantage point lets it deliver continuous, real-time imagery rather than periodic snapshots.
EOS-05 is the second satellite in ISRO's GISAT series, designed to eventually combine high-resolution imaging with hyperspectral sensors covering visible, near-infrared and shortwave-infrared bands — layers of data that go well beyond a standard photograph and can flag things like crop stress or water content that aren't visible to the naked eye.
ISRO says the satellite will support agriculture monitoring, disaster response, and border surveillance, functioning as what one mission scientist called "the eye in the sky." Because it never loses sight of its target region, EOS-05 can track fast-moving events — floods, wildfires, crop stress — as they unfold, instead of waiting for the next low-orbit pass.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the launch "another outstanding achievement by ISRO and a reflection of the excellence, innovation and growing capabilities of India's space sector."
Modi also pointed to the growing partnership between ISRO and India's private space industry, which he said was adding new strength and scale to the country's space programme. The GSLV-F17 itself is a three-stage, 51.7-meter rocket with a liftoff mass of 420.5 tonnes and a cryogenic third stage — the same component blamed for the 2021 failure this mission was built to replace. Getting it right this time matters for ISRO's broader launch schedule, which still includes the crewed Gaganyaan program ahead.
For a space agency that had gone winless through two attempts in 2026, a clean geosynchronous delivery on the first real try is as much a confidence rebuild as a technical milestone.
