Trail cameras strapped high in the canopy of a Nepali forest have picked out something researchers had never confirmed there before: a previously undocumented population of one of the world's most elusive mammals.

Where the cameras were placed
BIOCOS Nepal program officer Pawan Rai led survey teams into Dhawalagiri Rural Municipality, part of Myagdi District in central Nepal - steep, densely forested terrain that had never been specifically surveyed for red pandas before. Rather than relying on chance sightings, which are rare because red pandas (Ailurus fulgens) live almost entirely in the tree canopy, field teams first looked for scat near community forests to decide where to hang motion-triggered cameras.
Why the trees mattered more than the trails
Placing cameras roughly 16 feet up in the canopy, rather than at ground level, made a dramatic difference. According to a study published in the Wildlife Society Bulletin, arboreal cameras were eight times more effective at capturing red pandas than ground-based ones, and produced images sharp enough to distinguish individual facial markings - the basis for mark-recapture population estimates that don't require handling the animals at all.

A fragile population, a new baseline
Red pandas are officially listed as Endangered, with populations down roughly half in less than two decades due to habitat fragmentation, snares set for other animals, and hunting for fur. Myagdi's forest strips connect high ridges with the villages and grazing land below, meaning people and pandas share the same landscape daily - creating risk, but also opportunity.
BIOCOS Nepal is now working with local households on safer grazing routes and firewood management that keeps key bamboo stands intact. Bamboo shoots make up almost the entire red panda diet, and because the plant is low in calories, the animals must forage almost constantly, according to the Red Panda Network. By browsing tender shoots, red pandas also help keep bamboo spread in check, a small but real contribution to forest balance.
What happens next
Confirming red pandas live in a specific patch of forest can trigger tighter logging controls and new patrol routes there, and it gives conservationists a genuine baseline for the first time in this corner of Nepal, rather than assumptions drawn from habitat maps alone. Researchers plan to expand camera grids into neighboring valleys to see whether the animals reuse the same travel corridors year after year, and to compare day and night activity patterns to pinpoint exactly where human pressure and panda habitat overlap most.
Local residents, who often notice seasonal wildlife movements long before scientists arrive, are increasingly being asked to report sightings directly - a partnership BIOCOS Nepal hopes will let conservation teams respond to threats before a small, scattered population takes another hit.
Red panda habitat also crosses national borders in this part of the Himalayas, so regional cooperation matters for controlling illegal wildlife trade and keeping forest corridors connected between Nepal, India and beyond. Guides who bring visitors hoping to spot the animals are being asked to limit noise and keep trails away from nesting areas, so that any tourism income the discovery generates doesn't undercut the very population it depends on.
