A $44,521 seed grant nearly two decades ago just turned into contracts to bring reliable electricity to 230,000 Nigerian homes.

From a school project to a national contract
Ifeanyi Orajaka founded Green Village Electricity (GVE) in Port Harcourt in 2009, after IEEE Smart Village approved his initial funding request. "I still have a very vivid memory of the moment I received the email from the IEEE Foundation notifying us that our request had been approved," Orajaka told IEEE Spectrum. "The Foundation provided us with $44,521. I still remember the number, down to the last dollar."
That early bet has compounded. GVE and a second Nigerian developer, Henry Ureh's Darway Coast Nigeria (DCN), have each now been awarded contracts to build 109 solar mini-grids apiece across the country, according to African Business, bringing reliable electricity to more than 230,000 homes and businesses combined.
How the mini-grids work
A solar mini-grid is a self-contained local power system — solar panels, battery storage, and sometimes a diesel backup — that serves a village or cluster of villages independent of Nigeria's unreliable national grid. GVE's earlier installations, like a 60kW system serving roughly 5,000 households across six states, run on pay-as-you-go billing, letting families and small businesses pay for electricity in small increments rather than a lump sum they can't afford.
Darway Coast has built its model around a similar performance-based approach: the World Bank and Nigeria's Rural Electrification Agency back developers with grants worth roughly €600 per household connected, according to GET.invest, lowering the upfront cost of reaching communities too remote or too poor to attract a traditional utility.
More than 45% of Nigeria's urban population, plus a larger share of its roughly 200 million rural residents, still lack reliable grid access, according to IEEE Smart Village's project page on GVE. Mini-grids like these have become one of the fastest ways to close that gap because they can be built in months, not the years a national grid extension would take.
"We are proud of the impact our company could have on people's lives," Orajaka has said of GVE's mini-grid work. "Our business model allows us to make profit while providing significant returns to our investors."
Closing Nigeria's energy divide
The new contracts nearly double the number of people reached by IEEE Smart Village-supported entrepreneurs, pushing the total past 4 million — a milestone the humanitarian initiative has been building toward since it began funding local energy entrepreneurs across Africa, including in Kenya, Cameroon, and South Sudan, back in 2011.
For households that gain access, the change shows up in ordinary ways: streetlights that stay on for safety, shops that stay open past dark, and clinics that can refrigerate vaccines. Multiply that by 230,000 homes, and a pair of contracts signed in 2026 becomes one of the largest community-led electrification pushes in West Africa this year.
