Sometimes science takes a lifetime. For Professor Christine Maggs, one tiny fragment of pink-striped seaweed spotted in 1982 turned into a four-decade scientific obsession — and this August, she finally got her answer.
Prof. Maggs, a marine botanist who first encountered the seaweed while studying for her PhD, discovered the unusual specimen growing in a maerl bed along the Cornish coast. Maerl beds are remarkable habitats: dense carpets of calcified seaweed covering the seafloor, where thousands of organisms live among the interlocking pieces of coralline algae. They are among the most biodiverse marine habitats in British seas, found in sheltered coastal waters from Cornwall to Scotland.
The seaweed that caught her eye was distinctive — tiny, with pink horizontal banding and pincer-like tips, belonging to the genus Ceramium. After searching through scientific literature, Maggs became convinced she was looking at a completely undescribed species. But she needed more material to formally identify and name it, and the seaweed proved maddeningly elusive.
For four decades, she kept looking. She spotted fleeting glimpses of it over the years — once on a sea squirt, never in a quantity sufficient for the molecular work needed to confirm a new species. Throughout her career, it remained unfinished business, a pink footnote she could never quite close.
Then, two years ago, a team of marine biologists conducting a Natural England survey of Cornish maerl beds found what they thought might be Maggs' mystery seaweed. Francis Bunker, a freelance marine biologist who takes a magnifying glass on his dives — "You've got to be nerdy," he admits — collected as much material as possible and sent it to her.
Maggs had waited long enough that she bought a wine fridge specifically for the occasion. Not for wine — for seaweed. The cool, dark interior was ideal for growing the delicate specimens to a size large enough for DNA sequencing.
"This particular seaweed is so small I needed to get some molecular data," she explained. "That's why this has taken me 40 years."
With the help of Prof. Beatriz de Barros Barreto, who performed the DNA sequencing, Maggs confirmed what she had long suspected: a genuinely new species, unknown to science. A sample has now been formally added to the Natural History Museum's collection in London.
The discovery adds to what scientists already knew about maerl beds: that they are extraordinarily rich in life. New species are still being found in waters that have been studied for decades. "We knew that maerl was a rich, biodiverse habitat," Maggs said, "but we didn't necessarily realise that we'd be still finding new species that live on that maerl."
"I think it's what spurs you on really, finding a new species," Bunker added.
The story carries a note of urgency alongside celebration. Maerl beds are fragile ecosystems, threatened by bottom trawling, coastal development, and ocean acidification. They grow extremely slowly — some beds taking centuries to form — and are classified as a UK Biodiversity Action Plan priority habitat. The new species, confirmed just in time, adds one more reason to protect these ancient seafloor communities.
Angie Gall of Natural England, who organized the survey that finally collected enough material, described the diving as a rare privilege: "It's such a privilege to go diving somewhere like this and you never get long enough. It's different every single time."
Prof. Maggs has said she is simply glad she never gave up. Science, after all, rewards persistence — and the occasional repurposed wine fridge.
