A tiny chip is giving people their vision back

For the more than five million people worldwide living with geographic atrophy — the advanced stage of age-related macular degeneration — the last decade has offered few reasons for hope. The condition steadily destroys the photoreceptors at the center of the retina, making it impossible to read, recognize faces, or navigate daily life independently. There was no treatment that could restore what was lost. Until now.

Science Corporation, a US biotech company, has received a CE (Conformité Européenne) mark from the European Union for its PRIMA implant — the first brain-computer interface device ever approved to restore detailed form vision in humans. The authorization makes PRIMA commercially available across 30 European countries, with Germany expected to be the site of the first commercial implant.

What the PRIMA implant actually does

The PRIMA system consists of two components: a small photovoltaic chip measuring just 2 millimeters by 2 millimeters, implanted surgically beneath the damaged part of the retina, and a pair of specialized glasses equipped with a near-infrared camera and projection system.

The glasses capture the visual scene and beam near-infrared light onto the implant. The chip converts that light into electrical signals that stimulate the remaining retinal cells, effectively bypassing the destroyed photoreceptors and giving the visual cortex something to work with. A built-in zoom feature allows patients to magnify small text — one of the most practical quality-of-life improvements for people who have lost the ability to read.

The implant has an ultra-thin profile, integrates wirelessly, and does not require a battery.

What the clinical trials showed

The results published in the New England Journal of Medicine — one of medicine's most rigorous peer-reviewed journals — are compelling. In a multi-center trial across 38 patients at 17 clinical sites in five countries:

  • 84% of patients reported the ability to read letters, numbers, and words
  • 80% achieved significant visual acuity improvements of at least logMAR 0.2 (equivalent to reading five additional lines on a standard eye chart) at 12 months
  • The mean improvement was 25.5 letters, or more than five lines, on the ETDRS chart
  • Critically, the implant was placed under the damaged macula without reducing patients' existing natural vision

Mahi Muqit, a vitreoretinal consultant at London's Moorfields Eye Hospital, which led the UK arm of the trial, called it a genuine first: "Blind patients are actually able to have meaningful central vision restoration, which has never been done before."

The scale of the problem

Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in people over 50 in high-income countries. Geographic atrophy, its most advanced form, affects more than five million people globally. Unlike the "wet" form of AMD, geographic atrophy does not respond to existing anti-VEGF injections — until PRIMA, there was no approved treatment capable of reversing the vision loss it causes.

The condition robs people of the central vision needed for reading, driving, and face recognition, while typically leaving peripheral vision intact. Its effect on independence and quality of life is profound.

What comes next

Science Corporation is in active discussions with the US Food and Drug Administration to bring PRIMA to the American market. The implant has already received both FDA Breakthrough Device designation and Humanitarian Use Device designation — two designations that could accelerate the approval timeline.

In Europe, country-specific reimbursement applications are now underway, meaning insurers and national health systems across the continent will soon decide whether to cover the procedure. The company has committed to making access "real and reimbursable, as quickly as possible."

For the millions of people who have been told that losing their central vision was irreversible, PRIMA represents something genuinely new: a credible path back to reading a book, seeing a grandchild's face, and living with independence intact.
