A new chapter in American clean energy opened this month as Revolution Wind, Rhode Island's first utility-scale offshore wind farm, officially began delivering electricity to the regional power grid. The 704-megawatt project, located about 15 miles south of Little Compton, will supply enough power for more than 350,000 homes across Rhode Island and Connecticut.
The announcement came from joint venture partners Ørsted and Skyborn Renewables on March 13, with 60 of the wind farm's 65 turbines fully installed and the transmission cable to North Kingstown complete. The project is now 93 percent finished and expected to be fully operational before year's end.
A Milestone for New England Energy
"Revolution Wind is adding affordable, reliable American-made energy to New England's grid, helping to meet growing energy demand and lower consumer costs," said Amanda Dasch, chief development officer at Ørsted. The project is under contract to deliver 400 megawatts to Rhode Island and 304 megawatts to Connecticut.
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee called it "an important step forward for Rhode Island's energy future," emphasizing that offshore wind is part of the state's broader energy strategy to strengthen supply and support long-term reliability for residents and businesses.
Clean Energy That Saves Money Too
Beyond its environmental benefits, Revolution Wind is expected to deliver significant economic savings. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection estimates the project could save regional ratepayers approximately $500 million annually by displacing more expensive power sources — particularly welcome news as New England's natural gas constraints drive up winter energy costs.
The $5-billion-plus project represents a major investment in domestic clean energy infrastructure. Each turbine stands hundreds of feet tall, harnessing Atlantic winds to generate electricity without burning fossil fuels or producing carbon emissions.
