On a warm Thursday morning, Yan Swiderski stood at the edge of an aviary on Bodmin Moor and struggled to hold back tears. After years of careful preparation—breeding pairs, incubation, hand-rearing, and hope—the moment had finally arrived. One by one, then all at once, the white storks stepped into freedom, spreading wide their striking black-and-white wings and soaring upward into a clear blue sky.
"They do look majestic, don't they?" Swiderski said, watching them bank and glide over the moor. He is the founder of the Cornwall Stork Project, based at Hamatethy farm, a working organic farm near Bodmin Moor that doubles as a rewilding hub. Thursday's release marked the first time white storks have ever been set free into the wilds of Cornwall—21 birds in all, most hatched at the farm this year.
The project follows the model pioneered by the White Stork Project at the Knepp estate in West Sussex, which has operated since 2016 and achieved remarkable results. The Cornwall project began in 2021, when Swiderski established the first breeding pairs—mostly storks that had been rescued or bred in captivity. The birds that hatched on Bodmin Moor this spring are now hardwired to treat this landscape as home. Thanks to the white stork's powerful homing instinct, they are expected to fly south for the winter—perhaps to southern Spain or Morocco—and return in a few years to nest precisely where they were born.
Nature's Great Ambassadors
For Swiderski, the ecological significance runs deeper than the sight of majestic birds overhead. White storks are voracious predators of earthworms, insects, frogs, and voles—exactly the creatures that thrive in healthy, unchemicalised soil. Their presence, he argues, can serve as a gateway for broader conversations about soil health, organic farming, and wetland management.
"People sometimes ask me what the ecological function of a white stork is and my answer is always that they engage humans with nature," he said. "If you can interest people in birds like storks—what they eat, where they come from, where they go—you can have all those conversations about healthy soils, the importance of organic farming for insects, the importance of not overgrazing for small mammal populations, thriving wetlands. And that is worth a lot."
White storks were once widespread across Europe but declined sharply in Britain. Historical records suggest sporadic nesting into the 15th and 16th centuries; they disappeared from England's lowlands as wetlands were drained and farming practices changed. The modern reintroduction effort represents a conscious attempt to reverse that loss.
The Bigger Picture
The Cornwall Stork Project joins a growing network of rewilding initiatives across England that have successfully returned charismatic species to landscapes where they were once lost. The Knepp storks have now nested and raised chicks in West Sussex; the hope is that the Bodmin birds will join their counterparts on the autumn migration and gradually form a connected breeding population across southern England.
Swiderski noted that climate change is itself a factor in the species' returning range, with storks and other European birds increasingly appearing further north than historical records suggested—making Cornwall, with its mild Atlantic climate, an increasingly viable habitat.
As the morning wore on, the storks grew bolder. There was a brief tense moment when a crow took exception to one stork's presence and swept in close, but nothing came of the confrontation. The storks, big and unhurried, simply carried on—investigating hedgerows, circling wide over the moor, coming and going as if they'd never been gone.
When the last one disappeared over the treeline, Swiderski allowed himself a smile. "I don't think I'll get tired of the sight of them," he said. "They're so brilliant."
