One of the ocean's most magnificent creatures has returned to English waters after an absence of more than six decades, delighting scientists and conservationists who have tracked its slow resurgence with growing excitement.
Atlantic bluefin tuna — enormous, torpedo-shaped fish that can grow to three metres in length and weigh over 600 kilograms — have been spotted off the northeast coast of England for the first time since the early 1960s. A research team from the University of Exeter this week tagged five of the animals, attaching satellite trackers to monitor their movements and help scientists understand where these extraordinary fish have been and where they are headed.
"Bluefin tuna is a native British species," said Dr Lucy Hawkes, marine biologist at the University of Exeter who led the tagging operation. "They are supposed to be in our waters and used to be incredibly important to this region."
An Ocean in Recovery
The northeast coast of England was once world-famous for its bluefin tuna. In the early twentieth century, anglers and professional fishermen routinely encountered giant tuna in the North Sea — a resource so abundant that the region hosted international sportfishing competitions. By the late 1950s and into the 1960s, however, the fish had virtually disappeared — a casualty of intensive overfishing and the dramatic collapse of North Sea herring stocks, a key prey species.

Their return, researchers say, is a sign that this has changed — and changed for the better.
Dr Hawkes put it in stark ecological terms: "Bluefin tuna are top predators who can only be in these waters if the ecosystems underneath them are healthy. Essentially, their presence is a good way of signalling that your waters are doing well."
Careful Management Pays Off
Scientists have attributed the return primarily to "judicious management of fisheries" — specifically, the strict quota systems introduced by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) in the 2000s, which dramatically reduced tuna harvesting across the Atlantic. Bluefin tuna populations, while still considered overfished in some regions, have recovered substantially in the eastern Atlantic over the past two decades.
Climate change may also be playing a role, with warming North Sea waters and shifting prey distribution potentially making the region more attractive for a fish that follows its food. The ongoing recovery of herring stocks in parts of the North Sea adds another draw.

The five fish tagged by Dr Hawkes and her team carry satellite devices that will report their positions when they surface, building a detailed picture of Atlantic bluefin tuna movements in the North Sea over coming months. This data is scientifically valuable: it will help managers understand migration corridors, feeding grounds, and seasonal patterns — information critical for ensuring that any future fishing activity remains within sustainable limits.
The University of Exeter team will release their full findings later this year, potentially informing fisheries management decisions across multiple North Sea countries.
A 60-Year Homecoming
The tagging of these five fish is more than a scientific exercise. It represents the conclusion of a 60-year arc: from abundance, to collapse, to slow and painstaking recovery — driven by better science, better policy, and a willingness to give the ocean the time it needs.
