Brazil's Amazon rainforest is recovering. New satellite data from INPE, Brazil's National Institute for Space Research, reveals that deforestation alerts covering just 2,874 square kilometers were recorded in the 12 months to July 2026 — a drop of 36 percent from the previous year, and 55.6 percent below the average for the last decade.

If final annual figures confirm the trend, Brazil could be on track to record its lowest Amazon deforestation rate since satellite monitoring began in 1988.

A political and ecological turning point

The turnaround is not accidental. Since President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office, his administration has systematically tightened enforcement against illegal logging and mining in the Amazon. Rangers have been redeployed to at-risk areas, monitoring has been expanded, and the government has moved to formally protect swaths of Indigenous territory — a measure experts consistently identify as one of the most effective tools against illegal clearance.

Marcio Astrini, executive secretary of Brazil's Observatório do Clima, called the figures "historic" and said they demonstrated that protecting the Amazon and meeting Brazil's zero-deforestation goal by 2030 were not just aspirations but achievable realities. "The numbers presented today are the result of serious environmental protection policies," Astrini said, "and prove that it is entirely possible to fulfill the commitment made by the country to zero and reverse deforestation by 2030."

The Brazilian government unveiled the data at INPE's headquarters in São José dos Campos on August 7, as part of celebrations marking the institute's 65th anniversary.

Across all biomes

The improvements extend far beyond the Amazon. INPE's PRODES system, which produces the most reliable consolidated deforestation data, revealed significant drops across Brazil's other biomes in 2024–2025. Deforestation in the Caatinga — the scrubland covering much of northeastern Brazil — fell by 34.3 percent. In the Atlantic Forest, a biome that once stretched along Brazil's coast and is now among the world's most endangered, deforestation fell by 15.32 percent. The Pampa grasslands in the south saw the largest proportional drop: 41.7 percent.

The Cerrado, Brazil's vast tropical savanna and the world's most biodiverse savanna, also saw encouraging numbers. Deforestation alerts in the Cerrado fell by 7.8 percent compared with the previous year, reaching their lowest point in five years.

Why it matters globally

Brazil's Amazon is home to approximately one-tenth of all species on Earth and stores an estimated 150 billion tons of carbon — a figure that makes protecting it one of the most impactful single actions any nation can take on climate change. When forests burn or are felled for agriculture, that carbon is released into the atmosphere.

The success of Brazil's enforcement strategy has global implications: it demonstrates that political will, satellite monitoring, and Indigenous land protection can together reverse deforestation trends that once seemed entrenched. Observers worldwide have watched Brazil closely since the high-deforestation years of the early 2020s, making this week's data especially meaningful.

Brazil is entering this year's recovery trajectory just months before the COP30 climate summit, which will be held in Belém — in the heart of the Amazon itself. The data give Lula's government a powerful headline: the Amazon is healing.

The path to zero

Brazil has set an official target of zero net deforestation by 2030. Campaigners who once considered that goal ambitious now say it is within reach — provided enforcement continues and economic alternatives to illegal clearance are expanded. Protecting Indigenous territories remains central: studies consistently show that deforestation rates inside formally demarcated Indigenous lands are dramatically lower than in surrounding areas.

For now, the numbers offer something rarer than the policy debates: genuine good news from one of the planet's most critical ecosystems, backed by satellite data and verifiable measurements.
