A chewing gum has done what no mouthwash, lozenge, or topical treatment has managed before: cleared human papillomavirus from the mouth by more than 90%, according to a clinical trial published this week.

The specially engineered gum carries a therapeutic payload that targets HPV directly, reducing the viral load in participants by up to 93%. Critically, the treatment also nearly eliminated two oral bacteria known to promote head and neck cancers—while leaving the healthy bacterial communities of the mouth untouched. That combination of targeted action and preserved microbiome balance makes this approach stand out from conventional antimicrobials.

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection globally, and while most infections clear on their own, persistent oral HPV infections can lead to oropharyngeal cancers—a rapidly growing category of head and neck cancers, particularly in middle-aged adults. Standard treatment options for oral HPV infection are essentially nonexistent; there are vaccines to prevent it in younger people, but nothing to clear it once established.

The gum changes that equation.

Researchers designed the gum to release its active compounds gradually during chewing, allowing them to work through extended contact with oral tissues. Rather than washing away like a liquid rinse, the slow release gives the therapeutic molecules time to disrupt HPV's ability to infect cells.

What particularly impressed researchers was the specificity. Many antimicrobial treatments are blunt instruments—they suppress pathogens, but they also disrupt the beneficial bacteria that protect oral and gut health. This gum, by contrast, left the beneficial oral microbiome intact, meaning patients do not trade one problem for another.

The implications extend beyond oral health. Persistent oral HPV infections are increasingly linked to oropharyngeal cancers, which now represent the most common HPV-associated cancer in the United States, surpassing cervical cancer. Despite this, clinical guidance for managing oral HPV in adults remains limited. A simple, inexpensive treatment—something as accessible as chewing gum—could reach patients who do not have access to specialized care.

Researchers noted that the gum offers advantages over injectables or complex drug delivery systems: it requires no prescription infrastructure, no needles, no clinic visit. Patients simply chew for a prescribed duration each day.

The trial tracked viral clearance rates alongside bacterial community profiles, finding that even after sustained use, the gum produced no measurable disruption in commensal oral bacteria. That finding is scientifically significant—it suggests the active compounds in the gum have a relatively narrow antimicrobial spectrum, targeting the pathogens specifically rather than wiping out the microbiome broadly.

Researchers are calling the results a proof of concept for a new category of oral antiviral treatment. The next steps will involve larger trials to confirm efficacy across diverse populations and determine optimal dosing regimens.

For the millions of adults living with oral HPV infections and no good treatment options, these results offer something genuinely new: a straightforward, accessible path to clearing a virus that medicine has long lacked tools to fight.
