Dogs didn't just become our companions — they changed us as much as we changed them. That's the central thesis of a sweeping new work by Professor Peter Mitchell, an archaeologist at the University of Oxford, who traces 15,000 years of co-evolution between humans and their canine companions.
Mitchell's book, First Dogs: Hunter-Gatherers and their Canine Companions from Prehistory to the Present, explores how this extraordinary partnership began not with agriculture or civilization, but with the very earliest human communities — hunter-gatherers who lived by following animals and gathering plants across wild landscapes.
"The connections between dogs on the one paw and people dependent on wild plant and animal resources on the other are ancient, diverse, and profound," Mitchell writes.
Evidence of this bond goes back at least 14,000 years. Archaeologists have discovered dogs buried alongside humans in graves of that age, suggesting the relationship was already deep enough that people wanted their companions with them into the afterlife. Dogs appear in ancient artwork from every continent and hold places in the mythology, religion, and folklore of cultures around the world.
But Mitchell's most striking argument is about who held the power in this relationship. Rather than humans simply domesticating wolves and bending them to human will, Mitchell argues that people and wolves may initially have entered the relationship as something closer to equals. Both species were better off together — dogs gained access to food and shelter, humans gained hunting partners, guards, and load-carriers.
As these partnerships developed in different places and under different conditions, dogs began to diverge in ways that mirrored their human companions. In the frozen Arctic, where Indigenous communities built sophisticated cultures around long-distance travel across ice and snow, sled dogs became compact, heavily coated, and built for endurance. One of the most remarkable discoveries Mitchell highlights is from the Tibetan Plateau, where both humans and dogs developed strikingly similar genetic adaptations to high-altitude, oxygen-poor conditions. Researchers have identified genes in Tibetan dogs that allow them to thrive at elevations that would challenge breeds from lower altitudes — adaptations closely parallel to those found in Tibetan people who have lived in the same region for thousands of years.
"We do not know when dogs first joined them," Mitchell explains, "but until the needed genetic variants were achieved, hypoxia presumably acted as a constraint on canine presence." This genetic co-adaptation — the same environmental pressures producing parallel changes in two different species — is a remarkable example of convergent evolution driven not by shared ancestry, but by shared environment and shared fate.
The diversity that resulted from 15,000 years of this process is astonishing. Today, from tiny chihuahuas that fit in a handbag to Great Danes that can reach a person's waist, more than 300 distinct breeds exist worldwide — a range of body shapes, temperaments, and abilities unmatched in any other species. Every breed carries genetic signatures of the specific people they lived alongside, the work they were bred to do, and the environments they shared.
More dogs live alongside humans today than at any point in history. And as Mitchell's research shows, that relationship isn't just about humans choosing dogs — it's a story of two species that found each other at a turning point in history and spent 150 centuries becoming more themselves through each other.
Mitchell's work draws on decades of archaeological field research across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, weaving together genetics, mythology, and material culture to show that wherever humans went — across deserts, over mountains, into the Arctic — dogs were there beside them, changing and being changed in return. The bond forged between humans and dogs at the edge of the last Ice Age has proven, quite simply, to be one of the most enduring relationships in the history of life on Earth.
