Nepal's tiger population has reached 429 individuals — more than triple the 121 recorded in a national census in 2009 — according to new wildlife survey data, in a result that conservation experts are calling one of the greatest achievements in the history of species recovery.
The figure builds on Nepal's already remarkable success in becoming the first country in the world to fulfil a pledge — agreed by 13 tiger-range nations in 2010 — to double its tiger population by 2022. Nepal achieved that target years ahead of schedule, and the new survey suggests the recovery has continued accelerating since then.
"Their recovery stands as one of the world's greatest conservation achievements and demonstrates what determined political will, scientific management, and committed protection can accomplish," said Keshav Varma, founding director of the Global Tiger Forum.
At the turn of the 20th century, an estimated 100,000 tigers roamed Asia from Turkey to the Indonesian island of Bali. By 2010, that number had collapsed to around 3,200 — the victims of habitat destruction, prey depletion, and relentless hunting for the illegal wildlife trade. Skins, bones, and other body parts commanded extraordinary prices on black markets across Asia.
Nepal's tigers — Royal Bengal tigers (Panthera tigris tigris) — inhabit two primary national parks: Chitwan in the south, a dense subtropical forest and grassland bordering India, and Bardia in the far west, a more remote and rugged landscape along the Karnali River. Both parks are managed under strict anti-poaching regimes, with forest guards conducting regular patrols and camera trap surveys to monitor the population.
The success of Nepal's tiger programme is widely attributed to a combination of robust law enforcement, community engagement, and investment in habitat corridors that allow tigers to move between protected areas. Local communities living near tiger habitat have been integrated into conservation efforts, given economic incentives to protect rather than poach wildlife, and trained as guides and rangers — creating a constituency for conservation that did not exist a generation ago.
Camera trap technology has transformed Nepal's ability to count individual tigers. By analysing images from hundreds of cameras placed across the national parks, scientists can identify individual animals by their unique stripe patterns — a method precise enough to track not just population size but breeding success and range expansion over time.
The latest count of 429 tigers puts Nepal among the world's most successful tiger recovery stories. India remains home to approximately two-thirds of the world's wild tigers — around 3,700 individuals — but Nepal's rate of population growth per unit of habitat is exceptional.
Globally, the number of wild tigers now stands at approximately 5,500, recovering from the 2010 low of 3,200. That recovery is real but fragile. Keshav Varma of the Global Tiger Forum warned that poaching is resurging in some regions, and that habitat loss continues to threaten tiger corridors in parts of Southeast Asia.
"Building momentum and sustaining it is fundamental," he said.
For Nepal, the news is cause for genuine celebration — and for continued vigilance. The country has demonstrated that tiger recovery is achievable through concerted national effort. The question now is whether that momentum can be maintained as Nepal's human population grows, development pressure on forest edges intensifies, and the global wildlife trade continues to operate.
Conservation experts hope that Nepal's success will inspire other tiger-range nations to invest more deeply in anti-poaching efforts, habitat restoration, and community engagement. The lesson from Chitwan and Bardia is straightforward: when tigers are protected, they recover.
From 121 to 429 in less than two decades. It is among the most hopeful numbers in the natural world.
