A newborn foal has made conservation history on the vast steppes of central Kazakhstan.
For the first time in 200 years, a Przewalski's horse has been born in the wild on Kazakhstan's ancient grasslands. The young male, born to one of the reintroduced mares from the Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative, represents far more than a single birth. It marks the beginning of a new generation of wild horses on the Kazakh steppe — animals whose lineage stretches back tens of thousands of years and who vanished entirely from this landscape two centuries ago.
"This is much more than the birth of one foal," said Albert Salemgareyev, project coordinator for the initiative. "It is the first new generation of Przewalski's horses born in the steppes of central Kazakhstan, and a very important milestone for the whole reintroduction programme."
The last truly wild horses
Przewalski's horses — known in Mongolia as takhi, meaning "spirit" — are the only horses that have never been domesticated. Every other horse alive today descends from domesticated ancestors; the Przewalski's horse carries an unbroken wild lineage. For tens of millennia, they roamed the steppes of Central Asia, shaped by and helping to shape the vast grassland ecosystems they called home.
By the 1960s, they had vanished entirely from the wild. Hunting, habitat loss, and competition with livestock pushed them to the edge of extinction. The species survived only in zoos and breeding programmes, their numbers falling to just 12 individuals at one point — a genetic bottleneck from which most living Przewalski's horses today descend.
From the 1990s onwards, conservation programmes began returning them to Mongolia and China. Today, an estimated 2,000 individuals exist across these populations — a remarkable recovery, but still fragile.
Kazakhstan's steppes welcome their horses back
The Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative has been quietly rewriting the conservation map of Kazakhstan for years. Its work reintroducing the saiga antelope — a species that had nearly disappeared from Central Asia — earned it an Earthshot Prize in 2024 and international recognition.
In 2024, the initiative brought Przewalski's horses to Kazakhstan for the first time in two centuries, releasing animals from European zoo-based conservation programmes into a protected area in the heart of the country. The challenge was immense: moving wild horses across continents, acclimatising them to new terrain, new weather patterns, and an entirely different ecosystem requires extraordinary care and patience.
But the initiative's track record with the saiga antelope — which returned in extraordinary numbers — gave conservationists confidence that the steppe could once again support these animals.
Now, that confidence has been validated. The birth of the first foal proves not just survival, but thriving. The horses are eating, moving, and reproducing — exactly what a successful reintroduction looks like.
Why this matters beyond Kazakhstan
The Kazakh steppe is one of the world's largest temperate grassland ecosystems, stretching for thousands of kilometres across Central Asia. For centuries, it supported an extraordinary diversity of wildlife. The reintroduction of Przewalski's horses is not just a conservation win for a single species — it is a step towards restoring the ecological web that once made these grasslands one of the planet's most biodiverse landscapes.
Horses are ecosystem engineers. Their grazing maintains grassland structure, their movement distributes seeds and nutrients, and their presence signals a landscape healthy enough to support large herbivores again. Every new foal born on the steppe strengthens the case that this ecosystem can be restored.
For the scientists, rangers, and local communities who have devoted years to this work, the arrival of this young male is a deeply personal milestone — and a reminder of what patient, determined conservation can achieve.
